Growing up as the son of one of Bollywood’s most iconic villains is no easy feat, and veteran actor Shehzad Khan recently shared a candid look into his childhood. Reflecting on his school days, Shehzad revealed that his father, the legendary Ajit Khan, had such a powerful and menacing screen presence that it bled into his real life. The impact was so significant that young girls at his school were genuinely terrified of him, convinced that his father’s reel-life cruelty was a reflection of his actual personality.
“Ladkiyaan mujhse bahut darti thi,” Shehzad recalled, noting that his classmates would often whisper that his father was not a good man. The children, unable to distinguish between fiction and reality, would point to his father’s habit of kidnapping the heroine’s mother, mistreating female leads, and battling heroes on screen as reasons to keep their distance. According to Shehzad, the kids at his school were deeply influenced by the cinematic portrayals, leading them to believe that the villainy they saw in theaters was happening in his living room.
Interestingly, the confusion wasn’t limited to his peers; even a young Shehzad occasionally struggled to separate his father from his characters. He shared a memory of watching the Rajesh Khanna starrer ‘Andaz’, where a scene involving a train departure left him momentarily convinced that his father had actually left them. It was only upon returning home and finding his father there that the line between the actor and the man would blur back into place.
Ajit Khan remains an unforgettable figure in Hindi cinema, known for his suave demeanor and iconic dialogue delivery. As the mastermind behind some of the most ruthless gangsters and smugglers in classics like ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, and ‘Kalicharan’, he defined the archetype of the sophisticated antagonist. While his professional legacy is legendary, it is clear that his convincing performances left a lasting, and sometimes awkward, mark on his own family life.
