Supreme Court orders Rajpal Yadav to pay 2 crore in cheque bounce case

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav appeared before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to address a long-standing legal battle involving a cheque bounce case.

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav appeared before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to address a long-standing legal battle involving a cheque bounce case. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, issued a strict directive for the actor to deposit a total of Rs 2 crore. Yadav has been ordered to pay Rs 1.15 crore immediately, while the remaining Rs 85 lakh must be cleared by October 13, 2026. The court has officially accepted the actor’s proposal to sell his ancestral property to settle the outstanding debt.

The origins of this dispute trace back to 2010, when Yadav borrowed approximately Rs 5 crore to finance his directorial debut, ‘Ata Pata Lapaata’. Due to mounting interest and additional charges, his total liability has surged to nearly Rs 9 crore. During an emotional hearing, the actor revealed that he suffered a loss of about Rs 17 crore on the project. In a moment of grim humor, CJI Surya Kant remarked that the actor’s money appeared to be ‘Ata Pata Lapaata’—a witty nod to the film’s title—while advising him to focus on quality work to rebuild his reputation.

This legal saga saw a significant escalation on July 10, 2026, when the Delhi High Court sentenced the actor to three months in prison along with a fine of Rs 1.35 crore for each case. Although he secured interim relief on September 15, 2026, to avoid incarceration, the Supreme Court recently warned that his “rightful place is in jail” should he fail to comply with the payment orders. The court has clarified that his pending petition will only be reviewed once the specified payments are made. Yadav has expressed his full willingness to adhere to the court’s directives, and the matter is now set for a follow-up hearing in two weeks.
