Rajpal Yadav reveals his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata caused him a massive 22 crore loss

Beloved Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav recently opened up about the devastating financial toll his 2012 directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata, took on his life.

Beloved Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav recently opened up about the devastating financial toll his 2012 directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata, took on his life. Appearing personally before the Supreme Court regarding a long-standing cheque-bounce case, the actor revealed that what began as a 5-crore loan dispute has spiralled into a 22-crore nightmare. Yadav shared that the film’s release was effectively stalled after a targeted press conference against him, preventing its planned debut across 1,200 theatres. He lamented that the ordeal, which has dragged on since 2013, has not only drained his finances but also severely damaged his professional reputation and branding over the last 16 years.

During the emotional court hearing, the actor recounted how the initial loan was taken from a friend who claimed that 5 crore was an insignificant amount, only for the situation to turn hostile later. Yadav, who has appeared in over 200 films throughout his career, claimed he has suffered total professional losses amounting to 200-250 crore over the past decade. Despite the grim situation, he remains focused on clearing his liabilities. To settle his dues, Yadav presented a demand draft of 1.15 crore to the bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, promising to pay the remaining 85 lakh through the sale of an ancestral property. A potential buyer was even present in court to confirm the arrangement.

While the Supreme Court has previously issued stern warnings regarding his compliance, the bench encouraged the actor to look forward and return to what he does best—entertaining audiences. The CJI urged Yadav to focus on creating new films, to which the actor responded that the harrowing legal battle has actually provided him with inspiration for a new project. For now, the court has accepted his repayment plan, keeping the focus on settling the outstanding dues before proceeding with a merit-based hearing on his legal challenge against the Delhi High Court’s earlier conviction.
