However, the actor recently revealed that the film’s massive success brought a wave of repetitive offers she wasn’t interested in. Nimrat shared that she was flooded with scripts featuring variations of the same character—trapped, unhappy housewives looking for an escape. Determined to avoid being typecast, she fought tooth and nail to reject at least 10 to 15 such projects, choosing to hold out for roles that offered more creative range.
Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen wasn’t a calculated strategy but a result of her commitment to other international and domestic projects. After touring the world for The Lunchbox following its premiere at Cannes, she immediately dove into the filming of the hit series Homeland, followed by the Akshay Kumar-starrer Airlift. She emphasized that her career choices were guided by a desire to avoid repeating the magic of Ila, noting that she still keeps a sharp eye out to ensure she doesn’t slip back into the ‘bored and lonely’ trope.
Reflecting on her deep dive into the character of Ila, Nimrat explained that she embraced a raw, unglamorous approach to the role. She intentionally gained weight, skipped professional hair and makeup, and focused on the quiet, soft naivety of her character. By working closely with the art director to set up a realistic kitchen and drawing inspiration from the women she observed during her upbringing in small towns, she crafted a performance that felt deeply authentic. Interestingly, she noted that the industry’s perception of her has shifted drastically; while she was once considered ‘too Western’ for domestic roles during her modeling days, The Lunchbox completely flipped that narrative.
Despite the film’s intimate emotional core, Nimrat also touched upon the unique experience of working alongside the late Irrfan Khan. Because their characters primarily communicate through letters, the two shared almost no screen time together. Beyond a single reading and a brief moment in a cafe where their characters cross paths, the duo remained largely separated, a testament to the film’s brilliant storytelling that captured a profound connection without the leads ever truly interacting.
