Nimrat Kaur reveals she turned down multiple roles of unhappy housewives after The Lunchbox success

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the struggle of being typecast following the massive success of her international breakout film, The Lunchbox. Despite the global acclaim the 2013 movie received at Cannes and beyond, Nimrat revealed that filmmakers flooded her with scripts offering almost identical portrayals of trapped, lonely, and unhappy homemakers. Determined to avoid being pigeonholed, the actor admitted she fought tooth and nail to turn down at least 10 to 15 such projects, choosing to wait for more diverse opportunities instead.

Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography during that period, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen was not a calculated strategy but a result of her commitment to other major international projects. She spent nearly a year filming the popular series Homeland followed by a year-long schedule for the blockbuster Airlift. The actor also reflected on her immersive preparation for the role of Ila, where she chose to let go of vanity, gained weight, and spent months living in the character’s quiet, isolated headspace to ensure her performance felt authentic and grounded rather than performative.

Interestingly, Nimrat noted that her career has been defined by shifting perceptions. Before The Lunchbox, she was often told by the modelling industry that she looked too western to play a traditional Indian woman, a narrative that flipped entirely once the world saw her as the quintessential housewife. The actor also shared a unique insight into her chemistry with the late Irrfan Khan; despite their iconic pairing, the two rarely shared screen time, meeting only once for a reading and having minimal interaction on set. Today, Nimrat remains vigilant, ensuring that if a script even hints at the familiar trope of a bored, sad housewife, she politely declines.
