Indian cinema is in mourning following the passing of legendary actor Nana Patekar, who died at the age of 75. The powerhouse performer suffered a severe cardiac arrest at his Goa residence on Thursday. According to reports, the actor was found unconscious and rushed to Manipal Hospital in Dona Paula, where he was declared dead at 5:20 am despite 45 minutes of intensive resuscitation efforts by medical staff. Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at the hospital, confirmed the news and noted that a medico-legal case has been registered with a post-mortem examination pending.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Raigad, Maharashtra, the actor transitioned from the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art to the silver screen, making his debut in the 1978 film Gaman. Over a career spanning decades, he became a force to be reckoned with, known for his signature intensity, resonant voice, and an uncanny ability to dominate any scene. He earned National Film Awards for his unforgettable performances in Parinda and Krantiveer, while also delivering stellar work in films like Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, and the cult-classic crime thriller Ab Tak Chhappan. Beyond serious drama, he showcased his incredible versatility by winning over a new generation of fans with his iconic comedic turn as Uday Shetty in the blockbuster Welcome.

A recipient of the Padma Shri in 2013, Patekar’s contributions to the arts were vast, including his work as a director on the film Prahaar: The Final Attack. His personal life was marked by both resilience and private struggles, including the tragic loss of his eldest son, Durvasa, to illness. Outside of the studio, he was deeply committed to social activism, dedicating significant time to supporting farmers and rural communities in Maharashtra. The actor is survived by his wife, Neelkanti Patekar, and their son, Malhar. As the industry reflects on his monumental legacy, it is clear that his unique ability to command the screen through silence, body language, and unparalleled dialogue delivery has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema that will not be easily replicated.
