Mumbai Police orders actor Imran Khan to leave India following protest participation

Bollywood actor and Aamir Khan’s nephew, Imran Khan, has found himself in legal trouble after being served a notice by the Mumbai Police and the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

Bollywood actor and Aamir Khan’s nephew, Imran Khan, has found himself in legal trouble after being served a notice by the Mumbai Police and the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO). The actor has been directed to leave India by October 28, 2026, following allegations that he violated immigration laws by attending a political demonstration. The controversy stems from his presence at an October 10 protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, where demonstrators gathered to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The situation escalated after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a formal complaint regarding the actor’s participation in the rally. The case, initially registered at the Gamdevi Police Station, was subsequently escalated to the FRRO. Authorities pointed out that because Imran Khan was born in Wisconsin and is a United States citizen, he is strictly governed by foreign national regulations. While the actor holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, officials clarified that this status does not grant the same political rights as Indian citizenship, such as the right to vote or participate in political protests, and he remains fully subject to India’s foreigner laws.

During the October 10 protest, Khan was briefly detained by authorities. While being transported in a police van, the actor stirred social media by posting a photo and lightheartedly remarking that he was simply “going on a drive.” At the time, Khan maintained that he was attending the event as an individual citizen and questioned the restrictions placed on his freedom of movement. However, the Mumbai Police have confirmed that the legal action is being pursued under the Foreigners Act, noting that the government maintains the right to cancel OCI registrations when specific legal violations occur.
