Actor Imran Khan has found himself in legal trouble after the Mumbai Police and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued a ‘Leave India’ notice to him. The actor, who holds an American passport and is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, has been ordered to depart the country by October 28, 2026. This directive comes in the wake of his participation in a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10, 2026, which was staged to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over electoral roll revision concerns.
During the demonstration, Khan was detained by the authorities. Following the incident, the actor took to social media to post a photo from inside a police van with the caption, ‘Apparently I’m going for a drive,’ while claiming his presence at the protest was merely to observe issues regarding restricted freedom of movement. His actions triggered immediate legal scrutiny, with proceedings initiated under Sections 29 and 7 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
The complaint against the actor was formally filed by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan engaged in ‘political extremism’ and misused his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status. Authorities have clarified that foreign nationals, even those holding OCI cards, are strictly prohibited from participating in political activities or protests on Indian soil, as the rights guaranteed under Article 19 are exclusively reserved for Indian citizens. Officials further noted that under Section 7D of the Citizenship Act, 1955, an OCI registration is subject to cancellation if the holder engages in activities that impact the sovereignty and security of the nation.
