Tom Cruise uses a stopwatch to speed up his Digger prosthetic makeup process

Tom Cruise is known for his relentless work ethic, but he has taken his commitment to efficiency to a new level for his upcoming dark comedy, Digger.

Tom Cruise is known for his relentless work ethic, but he has taken his commitment to efficiency to a new level for his upcoming dark comedy, Digger. The Hollywood superstar revealed that he successfully slashed the time required for his intense prosthetic makeup transformation from a grueling six hours down to less than one. Cruise plays the eccentric oil tycoon Digger Rockwell in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s film, a role that requires him to sport grey hair, deep wrinkles, and a significantly larger frame.

Faced with a demanding production schedule, Cruise realized that spending half of his day in the makeup chair was unsustainable. With 12-hour filming days on the horizon, he calculated that between the six-hour application process and his own need for rest, there simply wasn’t enough time left to be productive. To solve the problem, he introduced a stopwatch and a chalkboard to the makeup trailer, tracking the application of every individual prosthetic piece. He challenged his team to shave down the time, initially facing skepticism from crew members who insisted it was impossible.

Cruise’s persistence paid off as the team began to practice and refine their technique. By timing each step, they eventually hit the sub-one-hour mark without ever having to rush the process. The actor noted that this meticulous approach is reflective of his broader philosophy toward filmmaking, where he constantly studies systems to find ways to work better and prepare more effectively. This transformation marks his most significant prosthetic role since his iconic turn as Les Grossman in 2008’s Tropic Thunder.

In the film, Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, finds himself in hot water after causing a massive environmental disaster, leading to a direct order from the US president, played by John Goodman, to fix the mess. Fans can see the results of his record-breaking makeup transformation when the film hits theatres on October 2.
