Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is facing an uncharacteristic hurdle at the box office as his latest release, Digger, failed to ignite the screens. The satirical black comedy pulled in a disappointing USD 8 million domestically during its opening weekend, marking the superstar’s lowest domestic opening in 19 years. With a hefty production budget estimated between USD 160 million and USD 180 million, the film is now staring at a significant financial loss, making it a difficult final release for Warner Bros. before the studio’s massive USD 111 billion merger with Paramount Skydance goes through on October 6.
The film represented a major creative pivot for Cruise, who traded his signature high-octane action roles for a more grounded, character-driven performance as a balding oil tycoon. This shift was intended to echo the filmmaker-led projects of his earlier career, such as Rain Man and Magnolia. Despite the critical attempt to showcase his versatility, the box office numbers confirm that audiences were not quite ready for this transformation, leaving the film trailing far behind the weekend’s top performer, the Amazon MGM Studios adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity, which raked in a solid USD 32.6 million.
Despite the underwhelming commercial reception, Cruise seems unfazed and remains firmly behind the project. Taking to social media, the actor shared behind-the-scenes photos and expressed genuine pride in the work produced by his team. He thanked the cast and crew for their dedication and joy throughout the filming process, noting that the experience was truly unforgettable. While the industry analysts focus on the numbers, Cruise maintains that he is honored to have collaborated with such talented artists on a film he holds in high regard.
