The Hindi film industry is mourning the sudden passing of acclaimed director Sanjay Gupta, who died on Saturday following a tragic head injury at his Mumbai residence. Known for his gritty crime thrillers and iconic action films, Gupta left an indelible mark on cinema with hits like Aatish, Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala, and Mumbai Saga. His final directorial project, The Miranda Brothers, was released earlier this year, while he also served as a producer on the upcoming film Visfot.
Actor Rohit Roy, who shared a deep, multi-faceted bond with the late filmmaker, took to Instagram to express his heartbreak. Calling Gupta his friend, brother, and guru, Roy wrote, “Today marks the end of a major chapter of my life.” Reflecting on their long-standing partnership, the actor lamented the loss of his confidant, questioning who would now discuss the nuances of cinema with him or offer the unwavering support Gupta provided during his lowest moments. The duo collaborated on several notable projects, including Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Kaabil, and Mumbai Saga.
Rohit’s brother, Ronit Roy, also paid his respects on social media, bidding farewell to the director with the message, “Alvida dost, go make the heavens proud.” The brothers joined several other industry stalwarts at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Mumbai on Saturday evening to perform the last rites. The funeral saw an outpouring of grief from colleagues and friends, including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Rakesh Roshan, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajpal Yadav, Fardeen Khan, and many others who gathered to pay their final tributes to the visionary filmmaker.
