Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the professional challenges she faced following the global success of her breakout film, The Lunchbox. While the 2013 drama—which premiered at Cannes—catapulted her to international stardom, it also pigeonholed her in the eyes of many filmmakers. Nimrat revealed that she was flooded with offers to play variations of her character Ila, a trapped, unhappy, and lonely homemaker, but she made a conscious decision to turn them all down to avoid being typecast.
Reflecting on her career trajectory, Nimrat admitted that she fought tooth and nail to break out of that specific mold. She noted that she rejected around 10 to 15 projects that sought to capitalize on the same melancholic archetype. According to the actor, the perceived gap in her filmography wasn’t a calculated strategy but rather the result of her commitment to other major projects like the international series Homeland and the Akshay Kumar-starrer Airlift. She emphasized that she would rather wait for the right role than repeat a performance that she felt was already beautifully captured in her debut.
Preparation for the role of Ila was a deeply personal journey for Nimrat, who spent months immersing herself in the character’s quiet, isolated world. She intentionally gained weight, let go of her vanity, and even collaborated with the art director to ensure her kitchen space felt authentically lived-in. Drawing inspiration from women she observed in small towns during her upbringing, she aimed for a soft, believable portrayal rather than an aggressive performance. The actor also shared that typecasting has been a recurring theme in her career; while she was once considered too western for traditional Indian roles, The Lunchbox completely flipped that narrative, proving just how quickly industry perceptions can shift based on a single, impactful performance.
