Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her stellar work in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the professional hurdles she faced following the global success of her breakout film, The Lunchbox. While the 2013 movie—which premiered at Cannes and garnered international acclaim—catapulted her to fame, it also led to an onslaught of repetitive offers. Nimrat shared that she was repeatedly approached to play variations of the “trapped, unhappy housewife,” a trope she fought tooth and nail to avoid. According to the actor, she turned down at least 10 to 15 projects that leaned into that specific, lonely archetype, choosing instead to hold out for roles that offered more depth and variety.
Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography during that period, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen wasn’t a calculated career strategy but a consequence of her busy schedule. She explained that after the whirlwind success of The Lunchbox, she dove straight into filming for the hit series Homeland and the blockbuster Airlift, which kept her occupied for nearly two years. The actor also reflected on her immersive preparation for the role of Ila, revealing that she intentionally let go of her vanity to embody the character’s isolation. She spent months working on the small details, from setting up the kitchen in the Malad apartment where they filmed to using simple touches like henna on her nails to add authenticity to the food-centric scenes.
Looking back at how the industry perceives talent, Nimrat noted the irony of typecasting throughout her journey. Early in her career as a model, she was often told she looked “too Western” to play a traditional Indian woman. However, the success of The Lunchbox completely flipped that narrative, suddenly making her the go-to choice for domestic roles. The actor emphasized that she remains vigilant about the scripts she accepts today, stating that if she catches even a whiff of the “bored, sad, lonely housewife” trope, she immediately says no. The film, directed by Ritesh Batra and produced by Guneet Monga and Anurag Kashyap, remains a landmark project for Nimrat, despite her having shared almost no screen time with her legendary co-star, the late Irrfan Khan.
