Despite the massive acclaim for her portrayal of Ila, a lonely homemaker in Mumbai, the actor revealed that she spent years fighting off scripts that sought to trap her in the exact same archetype. Nimrat shared that she received around 10 to 15 offers to play similar characters—unhappy, bored, and lonely housewives—all of which she deliberately turned down to avoid being typecast.
Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography during that period, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen was not a calculated career strategy but a result of her commitment to other major projects. Between the international success of The Lunchbox and her return to Indian screens for Airlift, the actor was busy filming for the acclaimed series Homeland. She emphasized that she was never going to repeat a performance that was already so beautifully captured, noting that she still maintains a strict guard against any role that feels like a retread of her early career work.
Reflecting on her preparation for The Lunchbox, Nimrat shared insights into the organic process she used to inhabit the character of Ila. She chose to forgo the typical vanity of film sets, even gaining weight and skipping elaborate hair and makeup to capture the character’s quiet isolation. By working closely with the art director to set up a lived-in kitchen in a Malad apartment, she ensured her performance felt authentic rather than rehearsed. The actor also mused on the irony of the industry, noting that while she was once considered too Western for Indian roles, one single film completely shifted those perceptions, proving how quickly industry labels can change.
