Nimrat Kaur reveals why she turned down multiple roles after The Lunchbox

Following the global success of the 2013 breakout hit The Lunchbox, Nimrat Kaur found herself in an unexpected position.

Following the global success of the 2013 breakout hit The Lunchbox, Nimrat Kaur found herself in an unexpected position. While the film earned international acclaim at Cannes and festivals worldwide, it also brought a flood of repetitive offers from filmmakers. Nimrat revealed that she was approached for at least 10 to 15 projects that wanted her to play variations of the same character—a trapped, unhappy, and lonely housewife. Determined to avoid being typecast after delivering such a definitive performance as Ila, the actor chose to fight tooth and nail to hold out for more diverse opportunities.

Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography during that time, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen was not a calculated strategy but a result of her busy international schedule. She spent months touring for The Lunchbox before being cast in the hit series Homeland, which kept her occupied for nearly eight months, followed by a year of filming for Airlift. She noted that her refusal to repeat the ‘bored housewife’ trope was a deliberate choice to protect the legacy of her breakthrough role, ensuring she didn’t dilute a performance that was already so beautifully established.

Reflecting on her preparation for The Lunchbox, Nimrat shared how she deeply immersed herself in the character of Ila. She purposefully let go of vanity, stopped looking after herself to gain weight, and spent months living within the script. To capture the essence of a woman living in isolation, she drew inspiration from the women she observed while growing up in small cities and villages. She even collaborated with the art director to set up the kitchen in their Malad apartment so she could navigate it with the familiarity of a real homemaker, utilizing simple details like mehndi on her nails to add character to the many hand-focused food shots.

Nimrat also highlighted the irony of industry perceptions throughout her career. During her modeling days, she was frequently told she looked ‘too western’ to play an Indian domestic character. However, once The Lunchbox became a global phenomenon, the industry shifted its perspective entirely. Despite sharing only a brief moment on screen with the late Irrfan Khan, Nimrat remains proud of the film’s authenticity and the way it defied expectations, proving that a single, powerful performance has the ability to completely reshape an actor’s trajectory in the eyes of the public.
