Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography during that period, the actor clarified that her absence from the screen was not a calculated strategy but a result of her commitment to other major projects. Between the international success of The Lunchbox and her role in the hit series Homeland, followed by the lengthy filming schedule for Airlift, Nimrat was consistently busy. She emphasized that she has always guarded her career against the “bored, sad, lonely housewife” trope, noting that even now, she immediately walks away if a project feels like it is heading in that repetitive direction.
Reflecting on her preparation for Ila, Nimrat shared the organic process she used to embody the character’s quiet isolation. She intentionally put on weight, abandoned her usual vanity, and spent months living in the skin of the character, even collaborating with the art director to ensure the kitchen felt lived-in and authentic. She drew inspiration from women she observed while growing up in small towns, aiming for a soft, believable portrayal rather than an aggressive performance. The actor also reflected on the irony of industry perceptions, noting that while she was once told she looked “too western” for domestic roles, the success of The Lunchbox completely shifted that narrative, proving just how much one iconic role can alter a career trajectory.
