Nimrat Kaur reveals why she turned down multiple roles after The Lunchbox success

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the struggle of avoiding typecasting following her breakout role in The Lunchbox.

Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the struggle of avoiding typecasting following her breakout role in The Lunchbox. Despite the global acclaim the 2013 film received at Cannes and beyond, Nimrat revealed she was flooded with scripts featuring the same archetype: the bored, sad, and lonely housewife. Determined not to repeat herself, the actor fought tooth and nail to reject at least 10 to 15 similar projects, choosing to hold out for roles that wouldn’t diminish the impact of her iconic performance as Ila.

Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen wasn’t a calculated strategy but a result of long production schedules for international and domestic projects. After touring with The Lunchbox, she immediately jumped into filming Homeland for several months, followed by a year-long commitment to Airlift. She also reflected on the irony of industry perceptions, noting that while she was previously dismissed as looking too western for domestic roles, the success of The Lunchbox suddenly cemented her image as the quintessentially Indian woman in the eyes of casting directors.

To inhabit the character of Ila, Nimrat went to great lengths, including putting on weight and intentionally letting go of vanity to capture the character’s quiet isolation. She worked closely with the art department to make the kitchen space feel lived-in and authentic, often opting for no makeup and simple styling to ground her performance. Despite sharing almost no screen time with the late Irrfan Khan, she remains grateful for the experience of a film that changed the trajectory of her career, proving that a single, well-executed role can completely shift how an actor is viewed by the entire industry.
