Nimrat Kaur, the powerhouse performer known for her roles in Airlift and The Family Man, recently opened up about the professional hurdles she faced following the global success of her breakout film, The Lunchbox. While the 2013 drama, which premiered at Cannes, turned her into an international sensation, it also led to a wave of repetitive casting offers. Nimrat shared that she was bombarded with scripts featuring characters identical to her role as Ila—a trapped, unhappy, and lonely homemaker—and she made a conscious decision to fight tooth and nail against being typecast.
Reflecting on her career path, the actor noted that she rejected around 10 to 15 similar projects to protect the integrity of her work. She explained that she wasn’t willing to repeat such a beautifully crafted character, choosing instead to hold out for roles that offered more variety. Addressing the perceived gaps in her filmography, Nimrat clarified that her absence from the screen wasn’t a calculated strategy to stay away, but rather a result of her commitments to international projects like Homeland and the year-long filming schedule for Airlift.
Preparing for the role of Ila was a deeply personal journey for Nimrat, who was active in Mumbai theatre at the time. To embody the character’s isolation and naivety, she intentionally let go of vanity, stopped focusing on her appearance, and even gained weight to make the portrayal more authentic. She drew inspiration from women she observed while growing up in small cities, focusing on subtle details like applying mehndi to her nails for food shots and setting up the kitchen space to feel lived-in. Despite the industry once labeling her as ‘too western’ for traditional roles, Nimrat successfully transformed perceptions with a single career-defining performance, proving that one iconic role can shift the narrative entirely.
