Annu Kapoor remembers how Nana Patekar charged only 21000 rupees for his directorial debut

The Indian film industry is reeling from the sudden loss of veteran actor Nana Patekar, who passed away at the age of 75 following a cardiac arrest at his Goa residence. The actor was rushed to Manipal Hospital, where medical professionals made a valiant 45-minute effort to revive him, but he could not be saved. Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department, confirmed the tragic news, leaving colleagues and fans in a state of deep shock.

Among those mourning the loss is actor-director Annu Kapoor, who shared a long-standing personal and professional bond with the legendary performer. Reflecting on their time together, Kapoor expressed his profound grief, noting that the actor’s vibrant spirit made the news of his passing particularly difficult to process. The two famously collaborated on the 1994 film Abhay, which marked Kapoor’s debut as a feature film director. In the movie, based on Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost, Patekar delivered a memorable performance as a ghost named Rana.

Kapoor fondly recalled the immense trust Patekar placed in him during the early stages of his directorial journey. Despite being at the absolute pinnacle of his career and commanding fees between 65 to 70 lakh rupees, Patekar chose to support Kapoor’s vision based solely on the strength of the script. In a touching gesture of friendship and artistic belief, the powerhouse actor agreed to work on the project for a mere 21,000 rupees.

Patekar’s illustrious career spanned several decades, beginning with his debut in the 1978 film Gaman. He went on to become a powerhouse of Indian cinema, delivering iconic performances in cult classics like Parinda, Prahar, Krantiveer, Tiranga, Khamoshi, and Ab Tak Chhappan. Even in his later years, he remained active in the industry with projects such as Housefull 5, O’Romeo, and Subedar, maintaining his reputation as a dedicated and fit professional until the very end.
