The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Mushtaq Khan, who passed away on Thursday evening after a long battle with lung cancer. As tributes pour in, filmmaker Anees Bazmee has opened up about the heartwarming origin story of one of Bollywood’s most legendary comedy scenes from the 2007 blockbuster Welcome. Bazmee revealed that Khan was originally cast for a minor background role, with the director even warning him that he would mostly be standing behind the bodyguards. Despite the limited scope, Khan’s deep bond with Bazmee led him to join the project without hesitation.
It was only eight or nine days into the shoot that Bazmee realized the actor deserved more. The director spent an entire night crafting a dedicated segment for Khan, eventually approaching superstars Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor with a unique request. Bazmee asked the lead actors to step back and let Khan take the spotlight, a request they readily agreed to given their friendship. This collaborative effort birthed the iconic line, “Meri ek taang nakli hai, main hockey ka bahut bada player tha,” a moment that forever cemented Khan’s place in pop culture history.
Reflecting on their long-standing friendship, Bazmee shared that Khan often expressed how this single dialogue defined his career, with fans constantly asking him to recite it even years after the film’s release. The filmmaker expressed profound grief over his friend’s sudden passing, noting that they had met just two months ago. Bazmee admitted he was unaware of the severity of Khan’s health struggles, as the late actor kept his battle private. As the industry remembers a talented soul, Bazmee noted that while individuals may leave, the beautiful work they leave behind ensures their memory lives on forever.
