Alia Bhatt has joined the celebrations for the cult classic horror-fantasy film Tumbbad as it marks eight years since its original release. The Bollywood star took to her Instagram Stories to share a fun picture of herself wearing the film’s iconic, custom-made eye mask. Known for its dark, atmospheric aesthetic, the mask has become a symbol of the movie’s unique visual identity. While the post was a lighthearted nod to the anniversary, it has further fueled the growing anticipation surrounding the upcoming sequel, Tumbbad 2.
This social media shoutout follows the official confirmation from July that Alia Bhatt will be joining the franchise. Sohum Shah, who starred in and produced the original, welcomed the actor to the project on Instagram with the caption, “A new chapter unfolds. Welcome to Tumbbad 2, Alia Bhatt.” This collaboration marks a significant career milestone for Bhatt, as it serves as her first full-fledged venture into the horror genre, promising a fresh and chilling new direction for the popular series.
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the 2018 original Tumbbad explored themes of greed, mythology, and fear through the story of a man searching for hidden treasure in a remote village. Though it had a modest start at the box office, the film evolved into a massive cult hit, recently drawing massive crowds during its 2024 theatrical re-release. Now, Sohum Shah is hard at work on the next chapter alongside director Adesh Prasad. With the ominous tagline ‘Pralay Aayega’ already creating a buzz, Tumbbad 2 is being produced under the banner of Sohum Shah Films in association with Pen Studios, with Pen Marudhar handling the distribution.
